It feels like electricity when Nick Kyrgios is playing his best tennis. Unpredictable, erratic, and unquestionably exciting. His game felt particularly good for a while, especially in early 2022. Spectators attributed it to maturity, coaching, or even physical fitness. However, anyone paying close attention saw something else. Behind the scenes, a new steadiness. Costeen Hatzi is her name.

The typical headlines weren’t used to introduce her. No debut on the red carpet. No photos taken by paparazzi were staged for conjecture. A simple, friendly Instagram photo with the caption, “Not a bad way to start 2022.” Furthermore, it wasn’t. By then, the meet-cute—a social media mirror sale that evolved into a shared life—had already passed.

Hatzi was more than just another Kyrgios-related name. She started a fashion rental business from the ground up because she had a degree in psychological sciences, a keen sense of personal branding, and an entrepreneurial spirit. She helped a player who was frequently characterized as turbulent gain clarity. Their pairing felt especially creative in that regard.

Hatzi appeared frequently during their relationship, including on tour, at press conferences, and even in the Netflix documentary that revealed Kyrgios’ emotional life. She was more than just tolerated by his circle, in contrast to past partners. She was respected. She provided stability and serenity in ways others had not, as even his agent openly acknowledged.

Throughout their time together, Kyrgios frequently discussed the impact she had on him in a remarkably candid manner. He claimed that being in a “healthy, loving relationship” was grounding him following a commanding victory at the 2022 Citi Open. His words carried the weight of someone who was accustomed to being distracted but was now able to concentrate.

Hatzi had to travel across continents, live out of suitcases, and give up routines in order to compete in Kyrgios. However, she accepted it. She acknowledged in interviews that prior to their meeting, she didn’t even follow tennis. She picked things up quickly. She joined the team and helped with hotel reservations, media relations, and day planning. quiet labor that has a big impact.

Kyrgios missed 2023 and 2024 due to injuries. His momentum was halted by knee and wrist problems, which made him miss important events. Hatzi was there the entire time. encouraging. hopeful. She wasn’t until all of a sudden.

The hints began to mount by the beginning of 2025. TikToks that are encrypted. Instagram bios were edited. Fewer pictures of a couple. Then, in a casual fan Q&A on Kyrgios’ feed, the confirmation was given: “Things happen.” I hope the best for her. A brief sentence that brought a lengthy chapter to a close.

Surprisingly, the breakup was handled with dignity. Despite being obviously upset, Hatzi refrained from attacking. She told reporters that she had no regrets about cooking, cleaning, managing, and loving Kyrgios. Her voice was very clear. She left without resentment because she had given the relationship her all.

As I read her interview, I stopped. I was particularly struck by the line, “I’ve found peace within myself.” That kind of grace is rarely maintained, particularly when breakups take place in public.

Hatzi has turned her attention to her own endeavors since the breakup. Style Studio, her company, has been expanding gradually. She has made a name for herself in Sydney without depending on being close to the spotlight thanks to her nearly 25,000 followers and devoted clientele. There was always that independence. It’s just more noticeable now.

In the meantime, Kyrgios is navigating his 30s with a combination of confidence and introspection. Despite the fact that his age suggests otherwise, he has acknowledged that he is not “in his prime yet.” He can still be brilliant, but it’s more difficult to find the emotional equilibrium that was apparent in 2022. Maybe that’s simply the period of adjustment following the loss of a reliable partner—someone who showed up for the messy, everyday days in between matches as well.

Despite its quiet conclusion, their relationship provided something remarkably hopeful: evidence that individuals can have a positive impact on one another without taking over the story. Kyrgios was never fixed by Costeen Hatzi. She just stood next to him as he figured things out. And it worked for a while.

Not every relationship is designed to endure for many years. Others show up to help us see ourselves more clearly, to sharpen us, to hold up a mirror—quite literally, in their case. This one appeared to do just that. Additionally, if the reflection persists, it was probably significant.
